ACLU to Hold Panel Discussion on Sex Segregation in Public Schools

CONTACT: Kate Miller, (502) 581-9746

LOUISVILLE, KY – The ACLU of Kentucky is hosting a panel discussion on Wednesday, October 29 about the growing trend of sex-segregated education in public schools.

Speakers will raise questions about whether public school resources should be spent on single-sex experiments, which have not been shown by research to be effective, rather than on reliable solutions to the problems many public schools are facing today. The panel will also address the primary rationale behind this trend – the notion that boys’ brains and girls’ brains are so different that they cannot both succeed in the same classroom – and the lack of scientific support for these theories.

The ACLU of Kentucky and the national ACLU Women’s Rights Project have a pending legal challenge to the implementation of sex-segregated classes at Breckinridge County Middle School in Harned, KY and to the U.S. Department of Education’s 2006 Title IX regulations that opened the door for public schools to implement sex-segregated classes. The ACLU contends that sex-segregated classes are fundamentally unequal and unlawful and violate the Fourteenth Amendment's equal protection clause, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the Equal Educational Opportunities Act, and Kentucky’s state sex equity law.

Confirmed speakers include:
·                    S. Frankie Anthony, concerned parent of two students in Breckinridge County, and plaintiff in A.N.A. v. U.S. Department of Education
·                    David A. Friedman, General Counsel, ACLU of Kentucky
·                    Araceli Martínez-Olguín, Staff Attorney, ACLU Women’s Rights Project
·                    Michael Aldridge, Executive Director, ACLU of Kentucky
·                    Christia Brown Phd, University of Kentucky, Studies behaviors related to stereotypes

The lead plaintiff in the ACLU challenge will give a first-hand account of the challenges imposed by sex segregation policies, and national and local experts and advocates will explain this trend in a broader context.
