In 2008, the various organizations working on LGBT issues in Kentucky and their allies came together for the first ever Fairness Summit, which convened in Danville in September, to discuss ways in which we could work in coalition with one another more effectively with a shared set of long-term goals and strategies.  The Summit was a great success and the Fairness Coalition was formed.

Mission of the Coalition

The Fairness Coalition seeks to bring together the various organizations working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights in Kentucky.  Our primary goal is comprehensive civil rights protections prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.  We will accomplish these goals and increase the capacity of the individual organizations by increased communication and a sharing of resources, and a strengthened and expanded base of allies of LGBT equality.

The groups who have committed to working within the Coalition together are the ACLU of Kentucky, The Fairness Campaign, The Kentucky Commission on Human Rights, The Kentucky Fairness Alliance, and Lexington Fairness. Many college groups have expressed a desire to become involved and we’d like to add them to our ranks in the near future.

Our primary focus is to win passage of legislation that extends protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity within the Kentucky Civil Rights statute.  In building a foundation for this legislation to pass we are aiding communities in enacting local nondiscrimination policies, assisting universities in authorizing domestic partner benefits, and developing legislative strategy around LGBT adoption.
