The American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky's communications internship program gives participants the opportunity to work with the organization's communications director on a wide range of civil liberties issues. An affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Kentucky is a statewide organization whose office is located in Louisville, Kentucky. Its mission is to promote and defend individual civil liberties throughout the Commonwealth through education, advocacy, and litigation.

The communications intern will be supervised directly by the ACLU of Kentucky's communications director, who will provide feedback for the intern on their performance, but may work with other ACLU of Kentucky staff as well. The communications intern will gain valuable hands-on experience in strategic planning, marketing, publicity, and event planning while having creative flexibility. They will collaborate on graphics and copy for promotional print and electronic media for both internal and external communication while participating in the planning and implementation of campaign projects and initiatives.


The ACLU of Kentucky seeks applicants who can demonstrate a proven work ethic, strong academic credentials, and a desire to assist in defending the rights of individuals. Flexibility, professionalism, and the ability to work in a team environment are a must. Experience in graphic design, publication design and publication layout are helpful skills while creativity, imagination, and an attention to detail will be essential. Based on interests and experience, this position could include opportunities to work on our newsletters and website in addition to collaborating on campaign images and messaging.


The ACLU-KY communications internship is a 24-week program that requires no more than 20 hours per week with a flexible start date and weekly hours. Interns are compensated at $20 per hour for a total not to exceed $9,600.
