We oppose any legislation that would prevent healthcare providers from providing trans-affirming healthcare to Kentucky children.
Decisions about a child's healthcare and extremely complex and are best made between the child's caretakers and their healthcare providers. Kentucky's trans children need love, support, and validation.
This legislation would explicitly prohibit healthcare providers from "performing surgeries or prescribing medications" for trans-affirming care for children.
Bills like this are clearly solutions in search of non-existent problems that serve only to ostracize and shame trans children for being true to themselves. Healthcare professionals have robust standards to understand and meet the psychological and physical needs of trans children in manners appropriate for their physical and psychological development. This would put the lives of Kentucky children at risk and prevent healthcare providers from upholding their oath to "do no harm."
Similar bills have become law in other states and have been blocked in federal court. Passing this unconstitutional legislation would not only harm and isolate Kentucky children, but would waste tax dollars. When lawmakers violate our constitutional rights and lose in court, they foot the bill for all legal fees.
With your support, we were able to stop this legislation in 2021 and 2022, but we expect similar bills to move forward in 2023.
