Heather Gatnarek has joined the ACLU of Kentucky as our first Legal Fellow.

Since 2012, Gatnarek has served as a Staff Attorney in the Kentucky Department of Advocacy’s Capital Trials Branch. She received her undergraduate degree from Boston College, and her JD from Georgetown. While at DPA she was a member of Equal Justice Works' Public Defender Corps Fellowship and a participant in the nationwide Gideon's Promise training program.

ACLU of Kentucky Executive Director Michael Aldridge noted, “We are pleased to have Heather join the ACLU-KY staff team.  Her dedication to equal justice for all Kentuckians is a perfect complement to the policy and legal work we do.”

ACLU of Kentucky Legal Fellow Heather Gatnarek continued, “I look forward to expanding the ACLU-KY’s ability to respond to the wide array of threats to civil liberties in our Commonwealth. As an ACLU-KY member, I’m honored to have this unique opportunity to work alongside Kentucky’s leading experts on constitutional freedoms.”

Ms. Gatnarek will work under the direct supervision of ACLU-KY Legal Director William Sharp, and will assist in all phases of the ACLU of Kentucky’s legal program, including representing clients in ongoing and future civil rights litigation in Kentucky’s state and federal courts.

This marks the first time in the ACLU of Kentucky’s 61 year history in which the organization will employ two attorneys, and it represents the organization’s dedication to utilizing litigation as a tool to combat government encroachment on civil rights in the Commonwealth.
