Haycraft v. Louisville Board of Education & Newburg Area Council, Inc. v. Jefferson Board of Education (1971)
These two cases were combined and formed the historic challenge to the segregated county/city school system. Newburg Area Council was black school that initiated the suit.
Taylor v. Hayes (1971)
Local civil rights attorney Dan Taylor was found in contempt of court and sentenced to jail for more than four years without a jury trial. Case argued before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Preston v. Cowan (1971)
Challenged the constitutionality of conditions of confinement at the Jefferson County jail, a dungeon - like facility before the lawsuit.
Alston v. Kentucky High School Athletic Association (1971)
Challenged the KHSAA to certify more black basketballl offcials. Prior to the lawsuit there were 2,500 officials, 50 of whom were black.

First KCLU case to challenge school segregation and its unequal treatment of black students.
